Finishing is the difference between a printed box and a considered one. It is also the fastest way to spend a budget, so here is what each option actually does, what it costs in relative terms, and where it earns its place.
Try a combination
Pick a stock and a finish to see roughly how the pairing behaves. A real sample still beats a screen — which is why every job gets one.
The full menu
Cost is relative to a plain printed box of the same structure. Minimums assume a single-position finish.
Hot foil
Metallic leaf pressed under heat. Reads as light, not ink — best on one small mark.
Spot UV
Gloss varnish on a matt sheet. Invisible until the box turns in the hand.
Emboss
Raised from the board itself. Survives scuffing and needs no colour at all.
Deboss
Pressed in rather than out. Quieter than emboss and kinder to thin stock.
Soft-touch
Velvet laminate. Adds grip, hides fingerprints, deepens dark ink.
Matt lamination
Flat, low-glare film. The default protective layer for anything handled in store.
Gloss lamination
Bright and hard-wearing. Lifts photography and shrugs off scuffing in transit.
Edge paint
Colour applied to the cut edge of thick board. A detail people find by accident.
